We were approached by the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic, in partnership with the City of Indianapolis, to create an easy way for tenants in Marion County to take advantage of a CDC moratorium on evictions until 2021. IndyRenterHelp allows tenants to create and send the appropriate documentation to their landlords per the moratorium.
IndyRenterHelp takes the user through a quick series of questions to determine eligibility under the CDC moratorium. If eligible, it collects information about the user and their landlord. The user can then decide to download the filled out declaration and cover letter, have the system email it to their landlord, or, for Indy residents, they can even opt to have the system send the documents via snail mail at no cost.
“Working with Theory and Principle on the design of our tenant self-help project was seamless. They worked with our organization and other stakeholders to ensure that the design and rollout met our needs and delivered the application as quickly as possible. This allowed us to help as many people as possible in a very short window of time. The application has worked flawlessly and was a turn-key solution from go-live. I cannot recommend their work highly enough.”–Chase Haller, Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic
How did we get there?
As the moratorium expires on December 31, 2020, this was a rapid response project that was designed and built in just three weeks. We began work and launched the product in October 2020. Because we had to move quickly, we eschewed some of our typical discovery and wireframing work, and instead combined our UX and UI work into two high fidelity mockups with different styling.
The client selected their desired styling, a bit more design refinement happened, and then we were off to develop the product. We were able to move quickly leveraging existing componentry and document assembly functionality. We also had experience with leveraging a mail service API to automate sending, so we were able to follow up quickly with a second release within a few days of launch with that functionality.
