Helping Hoosiers Find Legal Help

Details

The Indiana Bar Foundation sought to improve access to free and low cost legal resources for Hoosiers who need to navigate a legal problem on their own, while lessening the administrative burden of maintaining those resources.

The Product

This project delivered two coordinated products – a redesign of the Indiana Legal Help website and a version of the site, available via 120+ public kiosks, that focuses on

housing issues.

Indianans can use the Get Help flow to find organizations and events in their area or explore legal issues to find forms and resources for their concern. Site admins can

easily update the site, allowing the Indiana Bar Foundation to expand the scope of support it is able to provide pro se Indianans.

“IndianaLegalHelp.org is a national model for creating an easily accessible hub of civil legal resources. The partnership between the Indiana Bar Foundation and Theory and Principle has made a great resource even better.”

How did we get there

To kick off the project, we held a workshop with members of the Indiana Bar Foundation to establish the project goals and objectives. We clarified product needs, discussed existing friction points, and learned team design preferences.

Following the workshop, we dissected the information architecture and content of the existing Indiana Legal Help websites, then proposed a new site information architecture and created clickable mid-fidelity wireframes. In this phase, we focused on ease of navigation and aligning feature priority on the site with user needs. The team then presented three moodboard options, using the existing Indiana Legal Help style guide as a foundation. After Indiana Bar Foundation selected a style, we applied it to the kiosk wireframes to create high-fidelity mockups. Through the style, we were able to ensure the site was welcoming, accessible, and empowering.

We began building the kiosk while continuing design of the main site. This approach allowed us to iterate on pages and features based on Indiana Bar Foundation’s feedback. First, we launched the kiosk specific site, then the main site 2 months later.
